Wildcats have strong showing at Winter Open

OGDEN The Weber State University indoor track and field teams dusted off their shoes and wiped away the cobwebs of the offseason, kicking off the 2016-17 season with a strong showing at the Wildcat Winter Open. lt;br />"It was good to get a meet in early in the season and gave our freshman a chance to compete and learn the ropes a little bit," Weber State Director of Track and Field Dan Walker said. "I was pleased with how hard we competed. We still have work to do, but I liked our competitiveness." lt;br />The Wildcat throwers got off to a superb start to the season on both the women's and men's sides. lt;br />Senior thrower Natasha Powell opened her season with dominant performances in the shot put and weight throw, easily winning both events. Powell hit 46 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the shot put and 60 feet, 3 1/4 inches in the weight throw. Terrell Womack was second in the shot and fifth in the weight. lt;br />Senior thrower Justin Herbert opened with a strong performance as well, hitting 60 feet, 1/2 inch in the weight throw. lt;br />In the running events, redshirt freshman Isabella Williams turned in a strong performance in the mile, winning the event with a time of 5:12.32. lt;br />Kim Carlson won the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.07, while teammate Pihla Hokkanen was second at 2:23.70. lt;br />The Wildcat men had a strong showing in the 3,000 meters, sweeping the top four places, let by Jason Kearns' finish of 8:51.26. Josh Hardford won the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:54.93. lt;br />Joey Czellecz finished second in the 55-meter hurdles, and was part of the men's winning relay team, along with Jacob Moffett, Daunte Atkinson, and Bren Durfee, who won with a time of 33:28.54. lt;br />In the jumps, Annie Watts won the high jump as the Wildcats swept the top five places of the event. lt;br />Garazi Larrakoetxea had a stong meet, winning the triple jump and finishing second in the high jump. lt;br />Shealynn Wacaser won the pole vault
